IN Series Presents
The Heritage Signature Chorale
Stanley J. Thurston, conductor
A concert highlighting Women Composers and Black Composers
IN Series is proud to present The Heritage Signature Chorale, with conductor and Artistic Director Stanley Thurston, in a digital concert premiere curated especially for INVISION. This program features a galvanizing range of compositions and performances illuminating the contributions of Black and Women creators, which epitomizes Heritage Signature Chorale's mission to "preserve, at the highest possible level, the performance tradition of African-American choral music, especially the Negro Spiritual; to elevate the African-American singer and composer in all musical genres; and to bring a unique interpretation of classical music from America, Europe and other regions of the world.
In honor of Women's History Month, this recital explores the works of American women, including pieces by both living and African American composers, who are too often overshadowed in conventional classical programming. Representing the works of women poets and composers, the English art songs presented in this program give just a taste of the impact women have had in music and the world. From the poetry of Emily Dickinson to the works of Lori Laitman, Teresa and Allison explore over 100 years of love, reflection, and dreaming. This program was produced in coordination with the Atlas Arts On Air series in the Lang Theatre of the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington DC.
In the next installment of our subscriber-exclusive recital series, soprano Melissa Wimbish defies genres with a self-directed and -produced program celebrating women composers and creatives as well the incredible ingenuity of artists during the pandemic. From a remote collaboration with composer and violist Jessica Meyer, to videos of her pop duo Outcalls with Britt Olsen-Ecker, and songs by Nina Simone, Gina Maria Hidalgo, and even Mozart, Melissa’s program explores “difficult things, unpopular things, stuff that tests you,” in an audio and visual collage spotlighting her luminous voice, irresistible visual aesthetic, and incisive observation.

IN the latest release in the INVISION recital series, soprano Kristin Young explores spirituality, self love, and Blackness in her program "In Loving Color: Blackness in Thought, Poem, and Song." Of this concert of 20th century compositions featuring Black composers and lyricists, Kristin shares "We often hear that we should 'love ourselves.' What does that mean? How do we figure out whether we’re successfully doing so? At the beginning of 2020, in the midst of a quest to understand self love, I was granted the opportunity to truly spend time with myself...in quarantine. Over the course of the past year, I discovered that self love means finding patience and being gracious with myself when patience is difficult to access; dressing up and luxuriating in decadent meals; loving my dark skin and thick, 4C hair; appreciating lessons learned and knowing when the lesson is over; and exploring and deepening my spiritual practice. It also means spending time with and listening to the people who have helped form who I am and who inspire me. Loving myself means loving and living colorfully."
